In the last hundred years we have seen revolutionary advances in science and technology. Following the revolutionary concepts and monumental discoveries of Mendel in 1865, there have been significant contribution by Biologists and technologists to modern biology, Biotechnology as a seperate discipline has been considered in our country following the hard work of several scientists and the establishment of department of biotechnology by the Govt. of India few years ago. Modern biotechnology has tremendous applications in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, food security, environment biodiversity, marine resources, health care, etc. Since biotechnolgy is a skill based area the chaining of scientists and engineers taken from all disciplines relevant to the advance of biotechnology would be essential. The dept of biotechnology and the University grants commission have been creating awareness of the importance of research and manpower development in biotechnology.  

The Centre for Bioetchnology, Anna University was established in 1987 to carry out research and promote consultancy activities in frontier areas of biotechnology. This is the only center in the country to offer a B.Tech degree in Industrial Biotechnology. The center also offers M.Tech and Ph.D Programmes in Bioetchnology. The center furthur diversified its activities and a full fledged R&D Laboratory, the SPIC Bioprocess lab( SBPL) was established at the Taramani campus in 1993. This provides service facilities for the inhouse R&D for companies that need pilot scale and validation facilities, optimisation of production conditions and develop ment of genetically engineered products.  

The activities of the center are briefly given below.  

Thus, the center with dedicated faculty members, Technical and Administrative staff and collaborators is involved in developing hi-tech manpower and applied Industrial Biotechnology research for the economic growth of the country.
